COP26: Huge demonstration planned in Nottingham by the Coalition for Climate Justice

Today, world leaders begin climate talks at COP26 in Glasgow and, in response, more than 30 groups from Nottingham are joining forces to demand immediate radical action on climate change and climate justice.

Next Saturday (November 6), hundreds of concerned citizens from medical groups, churches, wildlife groups, labor unions, climate action groups and many more will demonstrate together at 1 p.m. on the forest recreation ground.

Nottingham will be one of dozens of major events in the UK and around the world.

The event is organized by the COP26 Coalition for Climate Justice, a coalition of local groups and organizations.

The coalition welcomes all who want to make their voices heard in Notts and join the event on Saturday.

Volunteers distributed posters in store windows and distributed flyers in the city center and surrounding suburbs.

“Climate change is the most catastrophic threat to humanity that we have ever faced. I’ve never spoken in public like this before, but I feel determined to speak not only on behalf of my generation but future generations. said Rhona, 17, a student from West Bridgford, who will be a speaker at the event.

Those interested in learning more and anyone who wants to stand up and be counted are invited to come and listen to the speakers and join in the walk. Speeches take place at Forest Recreation Ground before a march down Mansfield Road to an event in Old Market Square at 3 p.m.

Speakers at the event will include former Nottingham South MP Alan Simpson, as well as representatives from Nottingham community groups such as Stand up to Racism, DIY Poets and the Pythian Club.

Police and city council were informed of the event and the route taken by the march.

After the speeches in the square, the event will end with a “die-in” led by the 2012 Olympic canoe champion Etienne Stott, who will explain in his speech “a die-in represents the lives lost, currently at across the world in oblivion and invisible tragedies. Our bodies will also represent lives at risk in the future if our leaders, currently at COP26, do not act boldly and quickly ”.

Last week Etienne took part in a direct action demonstration under the Extinction Rebellion banner at an oil refinery in Hampshire and appeared on the Jeremy Vine show on Channel 5 to talk about effective ways to protest.

A statement from the Nottingham COP coalition states that “2021 has seen flooding and hurricanes to some of the biggest wildfires in history. The poorest people in the world and in the global South are disproportionately affected by these events, which are already forcing an increasing number of children to leave their homes without return.

COP26 coalition calls for an end to fossil fuel extraction and the immediate emergency decarbonization needed to keep us within 1.5 ° C

the rise in global temperature, as well as the end of political and economic systems based on injustice and exploitation that have brought us to this terrible point ”
