On September 22, 2021, as part of Pollution Prevention Week, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized 33 recipients of the Safer Choice Partner of the Year award for their design achievements, the manufacture, selection and use of products containing safer chemicals. Michal Freedhoff, Deputy Administrator of EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP), commented on the achievements of the winners, stating, “Today we recognize the leadership and achievements of partners and from Safer Choice stakeholders for their work in helping consumers and commercial buyers. identify products with safer chemical ingredients without sacrificing quality or performance. Additionally, I am delighted to see that the work done by many of this year’s recipients supports the Biden-Harris administration’s goals of tackling climate change and advancing environmental justice.
This year, award nominees were encouraged to demonstrate how their work with safer chemistry builds resilience to the impacts of climate change, promotes environmental justice and results in cleaner air or water. In the coming year, the EPA hopes to build on the winners’ work by expanding the Safer Choice program to make products containing safer chemicals increasingly available to underserved communities. This year’s award winners include small and medium-sized enterprises, women-owned businesses, state and local governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and associations.
