Obituary of Viola Aberly (1919 – 2021) – Lafayette, LA


On Tuesday September 21, 2021, we celebrate the life of Viola (Vi) Laffitte Aberly, who passed away peacefully on Friday September 17, 2021 in Lafayette, LA. Vi was the only daughter of Adolph Laffitte and Mr. Elia DeSoto Laffitte of Carmel, LA where she was born on February 22, 1919. Vi grew up in Carmel, then moved to New Orleans as a young adult where she met and married Clinton Charles Aberly Sr of Crystal Falls, MI. She was predeceased by her husband Clint on January 31, 1982 and her eldest son, Thomas Karl Aberly on November 20, 2020. She is survived by her 3 children: C. Claire Aberly Laffitte (Mrs. Royce Laffitte) of Richardson, TX, Brenda Aberly Williams and her husband Thomas L. Williams, of Atlanta, GA, and Clinton Charles Aberly Jr. of Lafayette, LA. Vi has ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Vi grew up in Carmel, Louisiana. She lived through depression and her family had no electricity or running water when she was a child. Viola was a fairly active woman and tried a lot of new things. Vi flew in a biplane in his teens. She attended New Orleans Art School, was a “Rosie the Riveter” in California, and introduced paint rollers and Fritos to New Orleans audiences. Vi also sold real estate in his 50s after moving to Covington when Clint retired from the federal government. Vi loved to travel and would mostly visit family in Texas and Georgia with Clint. They also went to Mexico and Hawaii. After Clint’s death, Viola traveled to Belize, Europe, Medjugorje and Israel. Vi was a passionate gardener, artist and loved to paint until she was 90. She exhibited her art in Covington and had a solo exhibition in Lafayette when she was 91. Vi also loved dancing and was active in many clubs and charity fundraising events. She was a member of groups such as prayer, NARFE, dressmaking, and a martini group. Vi has also won numerous medals at the Senior Olympics in swimming. Viola was the matriarch of our large, multigenerational family. She was loved by her family and friends and will be dearly missed. Services will be held at Walters Funeral Home, 2424 University Ave., Lafayette La. 70507 Visitations will begin Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. A mass will be celebrated in the chapel at 2 p.m. Tours will end at 5:30 p.m. A funeral service and burial will be held on Wednesday September 22, 2021 at the Catholic Church and the Immaculate Conception Cemetery. 1822 Smithport Rd, Carmel Louisiana 71052.
