NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Last weekend was Small Business Saturday, a day where the community is encouraged to shop locally. The Blue Marble in Thornes Marketplace said its sales were back on track with what they saw in 2019.

Small Business Saturday is one of the most important retail days of the year for local businesses. This shopping day recognized for the first time by the Senate in 2011.

“My favorite part of small shopping is the experience you get.” Springfield resident Ian Yankson said.

“We give you customer service that you won’t get in a big box store, we care about the community, we are part of the community. Said Cathie Walz, owner of The Blue Marble, a local gift shop in Thornes Marketplace.

A recent American Express poll found that 78% of small businesses said this holiday season will impact their ability to stay open in 2022.

“It was busy, everyone was in a good mood, it was a fun day.” Walz said.

Shopping small means that a higher percentage of every dollar will flow back into the local community. A huge benefit to the economy of Western Massachusetts, especially in the wake of COVID-19 setbacks, The Blue Marble is focused on keeping its customers happy this season.

Even buying a local coffee from a chain can benefit the local economy in the long run.
