Sterling softball has enjoyed incredible success throughout the season and over the weekend the 20-5 Tigers added to that success by earning a berth in the State Class 3A tournament at Aurora Sports Park. next weekend.
Sterling hosted his own Class 3A tournament in Region 3 as a No.4 seed and the Tigers did not disappoint. They dominated Burlington (29th) in Game 1 of the tournament with a 13-2 final. It only took them five innings to force the rule of leniency.
Senior Ashley Wecker, junior Reagan Fehringer, senior Jenna Gordon and senior Kenzley Palser all contributed two RBIs to the Tigers’ nine earned runs while senior Aubrey Wright added the last. The Tigers had 14 hits in all. Fehringer shone on the mound as she allowed just two earned runs and five hits while striking out seven and allowing no walks.
The other match that morning, between No. 13 Weld Central and No. 20 Valley, ended 18-0 in favor of Weld Central. It prepared the Tigers and Rebels for a showdown in the regional title game, and it didn’t disappoint. Both teams contested the full seven innings as they gradually won each other. The Tigers scored a single run in the first and fourth innings and the Rebels with their own solo run in the fifth frame.
The ladies finished each half-inning after that with zeros as the Tigers hung on for a 2-1 finish and the regional title. Wright and Fehringer each represented RBI as Fehringer, once again, was brilliant in her second performance of the day. She struck out 13 batters and also didn’t allow a walk this round.
From now on, the ladies will have to wait patiently to see where their fortune lies at the state tournament and where the CHSAA will place them in parentheses.
