Washington DC charter school incorporates financial education into its curriculum

WASHINGTON DC – “You take the money you have, invest it, and then watch it work for you.”

Here at Legends Charter School, aptly housed in a Washington DC corporate office, financial education is comprehensively integrated into the curriculum and offered to the entire school community.

“A payment taken from your bank account… it’s a debit. Each class here is named after a stock portfolio,” said Shomari James, co-founder and CEO of Equity Now.

James, one of the four founding members of Legends, wanted the student body, made up mostly of children from minority backgrounds, to gain real-life experiences in investing and working with money.

“It’s the machine that has your money and it’s linked to your bank. When you have an understanding of money, it changes things, it opens up opportunities for you,” James said.

The kids couldn’t have had better teachers on the subject. Shomari has ripped people, like Justin Devoe, straight out of the financial world, convincing them that helping these kids is their true calling.

“So when you start investing, don’t be scared or upset because you don’t have a lot of money right away.”

Children are more invested in this class because they can earn hundreds of dollars in scholarships to invest in their own wallets.

“You really have to learn how to invest and grow your money at a young age, and I think it’s really good for young kids to learn that,” said Grade 5 student Sincere Turner.

Turner turns out to be really good at investing. He is one of the current students chosen to use scholarship money to build his personal portfolio.

The school uses its resources to help create wealth for adults as well, who are part of the Legends community.

“We know what teacher salaries are, so what Justin does is he organizes specific classes just for teachers to also talk to them about their finances or financial education, so they can feel prepared,” James said.

“I love that he, too, the finance department, Mr. Devoe is also helping parents save money, start investing in stocks and stuff like that,” said Dionna Towell, parent and teacher at Legends.
